Shipbuilding steel is not a grade you can buy on its chemistry alone, because what makes it acceptable is a classification society approval. The society approves the mill to produce a grade, witnesses or accepts the testing, and its stamp on the plate together with the certificate is what a surveyor will look for — so the enquiry must name the society, since a plate approved by one is not automatically acceptable to another and retrospective approval is not a thing. State the society, the grade and any higher strength designation the design calls for. Two points then follow. Traceability runs from the plate marking back to the heat and the certificate, and a plate whose marking has been cut off in the shop has lost it, which is why marking is transferred before cutting. And corrosion resistance in these grades comes from the coating system and the corrosion allowance rather than from the steel, so the paint specification is part of the same conversation.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Classification society | Name it — approval is not transferable between societies |
|---|---|
| Grade | The ship steel grade, and any higher strength designation |
| Thickness and plate size | With the tolerance class required |
| Impact testing | Test temperature and energy for the grade |
| Through-thickness quality | Where the plate is loaded or welded through its thickness |
| Marking and traceability | Transferred before cutting, or the trace is lost |
| Certification | Society certificate, with the surveyor stamp required |
| Corrosion allowance | As specified by the design, separate from the coating |
| Coating system | The marine paint specification and film thicknesses |
| Cutting and preparation | Profile cutting, bevels, and the edge quality required |
| Ultrasonic testing | State if lamination testing is required |
| Quantity and programme | Tonnage, plate weights, and the required delivery date |
