A steam trap has two failure modes and they cost in opposite ways. Failed shut, condensate backs up and the plant it serves stops heating, which somebody notices immediately. Failed open, live steam blows straight to the condensate system continuously, and nothing at all appears to be wrong — the process still works, and the loss shows up only in the fuel bill, which is why a population of traps that has never been surveyed typically contains a significant number of blowing traps that nobody has reported. That is the argument for a survey and a replacement programme rather than replacing traps one at a time as they are noticed. Selection itself follows the duty. Float and thermostatic traps suit modulating equipment where condensate arrives continuously; thermodynamic traps suit steam mains where the load is intermittent and the trap must survive being outdoors; inverted bucket traps tolerate dirt and waterhammer.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Application | Steam main drainage, tracing, or process equipment |
|---|---|
| Trap type | Float and thermostatic, thermodynamic, inverted bucket, or balanced pressure |
| Condensate load | Kilograms per hour, at start-up as well as running |
| Steam pressure | Maximum and the actual working pressure at the trap |
| Backpressure | Pressure in the condensate return, which limits some trap types |
| Superheat | State if present — it rules out some trap types |
| Connection | Screwed, flanged or universal connector, with size and rating |
| Materials | Body material suited to the pressure, temperature and service |
| Freezing or outdoor exposure | Affects the trap type and the installation orientation |
| Existing trap | Make, model and connection, if this is a replacement |
| Trap survey | State if a survey of the population is wanted before ordering |
| Monitoring | State if failed-open detection or monitoring is required |
