Coil is a feedstock purchase rather than a piece purchase, and that changes what has to be specified. A sheet is judged when it arrives; a coil is judged by how it behaves running through a line for the next several hours, so the properties that matter are the ones that stay consistent along its length. Camber — a sideways curvature down the strip — makes a roll formed section drift out of square; crown, the thickness variation across the width, does the same in a different way; and a coil whose mechanical properties wander along its length produces parts that pass at the head and fail at the tail. Ask the mill about consistency, not just about the grade. The physical parameters matter just as much and are easy to get wrong: coil weight against the crane, inner diameter against the decoiler mandrel, and outer diameter against the space the line has. State those, the width tolerance and what the coil is being run into.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Downstream process | Slitting, roll forming, pressing, or cut to length |
|---|---|
| Grade | The structural or forming grade required |
| Thickness and width | With the tolerances, since the line depends on them |
| Coil weight | Against the crane and the decoiler capacity |
| Inner diameter | It must match the decoiler mandrel |
| Maximum outer diameter | Set by the space around the line |
| Camber | Sideways curvature makes formed sections drift out of square |
| Crown | Thickness variation across the width |
| Property consistency | Along the coil — parts should not fail at the tail |
| Surface condition | As-rolled, pickled and oiled, or oiled for storage |
| Edge condition | Mill edge or slit edge, and the burr limit |
| Certification | Mill certificate type and traceability to the heat |
