Coating mass is chosen the same way as it is for sheet, and our galvanised sheets page sets out why the word galvanised on its own specifies nothing. What is different about coil is that the coating has to survive a forming line before it ever reaches service. The rolls that shape the section press on the zinc as they work it, so tooling condition and lubrication decide whether the part comes off with a clean face or with score marks down its length that will corrode first. Powdering at the corners is the other symptom, and it comes from asking a coating to bend more tightly than it will tolerate — so the profile and its smallest radius belong in the enquiry, because they constrain the coating as much as the coating constrains them. Then the two things that are pure coil: white rust forms on coated strip stored wound up and damp, and every slit edge is bare steel down both sides of the strip.
