A load rating on shelving is per level and uniformly distributed, and both halves of that are routinely misread. Per level means the bay total is a separate and lower figure than the level rating multiplied by the number of levels. Uniformly distributed means spread across the shelf, so a single heavy item in the middle of a shelf rated for a much larger uniform load can still deflect or fail it. State the heaviest single item as well as the total. Two more things belong in the enquiry rather than in the installation. Anchoring: tall bays are anchored to the floor and, where they are back to back or free standing, braced or tied, because a run of shelving that is loaded unevenly and not fixed is a toppling hazard around people. And access — whether stock is picked by hand, by ladder or by truck decides the level heights and the aisle width, and aisle width is what determines whether the store actually works.
