The Ex certification for an offshore luminaire is the same conversation as onshore, and our flameproof lighting page covers it. What changes offshore is the economics of maintenance, and it changes the answer. Every lamp change is a permit, a working-at-height plan and often a scaffold or a rope access team, so the cost of ownership is dominated by how long the fitting survives rather than by what it costs to buy — a long-life LED module in a body that lasts years in salt air is cheaper than a fitting that needs attending to. Corrosion drives the rest: aluminium alloys used offshore carry restricted copper content, fixings are 316 stainless, and the coating system is normally the operator's specification rather than the manufacturer's standard. Emergency luminaires on escape routes and at the muster point carry a stated duration.
