Roller bearings are chosen where load matters more than speed, and the roller geometry follows from how the shaft is actually held. A cylindrical roller bearing carries heavy radial load and, in most arrangements, lets the shaft move axially through it, which is exactly what a long shaft needs at its non-locating end as it grows with temperature. A tapered roller bearing carries radial and axial load together and is normally mounted as an opposed pair, which is why setting the mounted preload or endplay is part of fitting it and not an optional refinement — a pair set too tight runs hot and fails quickly, and one set too loose lets the shaft wander. Spherical roller bearings accommodate genuine misalignment between housings, which is what makes them the standard choice on conveyor pulleys, crushers and other structures that flex under load.
