The word galvanised on its own describes nothing useful, because the coating comes in a range of masses and the mass is what determines how long it lasts. A designation stating grams of zinc per square metre over both surfaces is the specification, and the difference between a light coating and a heavy one is the difference between a few years and a few decades in coastal air — so it belongs in the enquiry, not in the assumption. Two further things are worth knowing. Zinc protects steel sacrificially, which is why a cut edge or a small scratch does not immediately rust: the surrounding zinc protects the exposed steel for a distance, and that is why sheared edges on galvanised sheet are usually acceptable without treatment while a large bare area is not. And the coating is a metallurgical layer that can crack if the sheet is bent too tightly, so the forming a part needs should be stated with the coating mass.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Coating mass | Zinc per square metre over both surfaces — this is the specification |
|---|---|
| Coating type | Zinc, or a zinc-aluminium alloy coating |
| Exposure | Internal, external inland, or coastal — it sets the coating mass |
| Steel grade | The base grade beneath the coating |
| Thickness | Base metal thickness, stated separately from the coating |
| Sheet size | Standard sheet, or cut to a stated size |
| Forming | Bend radius required — a tight bend can crack the coating |
| Surface treatment | Skin passed, chromate passivated, or oiled |
| Painting | State if the sheet will be painted, which needs the right pretreatment |
| Cut edges | Zinc protects them sacrificially — state if treatment is specified |
| Certification | Mill certificate with the coating test result |
| Quantity | Sheets or tonnage per thickness and coating mass |
