Stainless sheet is ordered as a grade and a finish, and the finish is a designation rather than a description — a mill 2B, a bright annealed BA, a brushed No. 4 and a mirror polish are defined surfaces with defined appearances, and asking for brushed without the designation invites a mismatch across a job where panels are made in more than one batch. State the designation, and state the grain direction if panels sit side by side, because a brushed finish looks different depending on which way the grain runs. The grade decision is the familiar one and here it is not close: 304 pits in chloride and coastal air supplies chloride continuously, so architectural and equipment work near the Gulf specifies 316 unless there is a reason not to. Finally, order sheets with the protective film on and leave it until the last moment, because the commonest damage to stainless is inflicted during handling and fabrication rather than in service.
