Hazardous area lighting has to satisfy two people who rarely talk to each other: the electrical engineer who needs the certification to match the zone, and whoever has to see well enough to work. So the enquiry needs the lux level and the mounting height alongside the zone, gas group and temperature class, because a luminaire certified for the area but mounted twelve metres up on a pipe rack may still leave a walkway too dark to inspect. LED has largely displaced fluorescent and discharge here, and the reason is maintenance access rather than efficiency — replacing a lamp in a Zone 1 luminaire means a permit, scaffold or a MEWP, and a fitting that lasts many years is worth a premium that has nothing to do with the electricity bill. One caution specific to this climate: LED life is a function of junction temperature, so a fitting rated for a temperate ambient will not deliver its published life on an unshaded rack here. State the ambient.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Zone | Zone 1 or 2 for gas; Zone 21 or 22 for dust |
|---|---|
| Gas group and temperature class | IIA, IIB or IIC, and T1 to T6 |
| Ambient temperature range | The certificate and the LED life both depend on it |
| Illuminance required | Lux on the working plane, and the area covered |
| Mounting height and method | Ceiling, wall, pole or pipe bracket, and the height |
| Luminaire type | Linear, floodlight, wellglass, bulkhead or emergency |
| Emergency function | State if integral battery backup and duration are required |
| Supply voltage | 230 V at 60 Hz, or another supply available at the position |
| Cable entries | Number, size and thread, with certified glands |
| Corrosion exposure | Coastal or offshore — decides body material and finish |
| IP rating | Separate from the Ex protection concept |
| Control | Switched, photocell, or dimmed and controlled remotely |
| Documentation | Certificate, photometric data and the marking plate details |
