Intrinsic safety is the only protection concept that limits energy rather than containing an explosion, and that gives it a property none of the others have: the circuit is safe enough to work on live, which is why it is the normal choice for instrumentation in Zone 0 and for anything a technician must calibrate in place. The consequence is that you cannot buy an intrinsically safe device on its own. Safety belongs to the loop, so the field device, the barrier or isolator, and the cable between them are certified as a system, and the loop only holds if the barrier's output parameters stay within the device's input parameters, with the cable's own capacitance and inductance counted in. That last term is the one most often forgotten, and it is why a long run can invalidate a loop that was correct on paper. Send the device, the barrier and the cable length together, and state whether a galvanic isolator is preferred over a zener barrier.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Zone | Zone 0, 1 or 2 — Ex ia is required for Zone 0 |
|---|---|
| Gas group and temperature class | IIA, IIB or IIC, and T1 to T6 |
| Protection level | Ex ia, ib or ic, matched to the zone |
| Field device parameters | Maximum input voltage, current, power, capacitance and inductance |
| Barrier parameters | Output voltage, current, power and permitted cable parameters |
| Cable length | Its capacitance and inductance count against the loop budget |
| Barrier type | Zener barrier needing a clean earth, or a galvanic isolator |
| Earthing | Zener barriers need a dedicated intrinsically safe earth |
| Signal type | 4-20 mA, digital, HART, temperature or contact input |
| Certification scheme | IECEx, ATEX, or another accepted by your specification |
| Ambient temperature range | The certificate is issued for a stated range |
| Documentation | Loop calculation, certificates and the descriptive system document |
