Engraving is chosen over printing when the marking has to outlive the surface it sits on. A laminated plastic plate engraved through a coloured top layer, or a stainless plate marked by laser or chemical etch, keeps its legend after the paint around it has weathered off — which is why valve tags, panel legends, equipment nameplates and asset identifiers are made this way and printed labels are not. The information that has to travel with the order is the schedule itself: an exact list of legends, because a plate engraved with a typo is scrap rather than a correction, and the proofing step is the point of the whole process. Then the physical details — plate size, whether it is screw fixed, adhesive or hung on a wire or chain, and the character height, which follows reading distance. For valve tags in the field, say whether the tag must survive being handled, painted over and hosed down for the next twenty years.
