A barcode is only as good as the worst read, and the two things that ruin reads on an industrial site are damage and contrast. A linear barcode fails as soon as a scratch or a smear crosses the bars, whereas a two-dimensional code such as a DataMatrix carries error correction and will often still read with a substantial part of it missing — which is why asset marking on plant, tools and returnable items has largely moved to 2D. Contrast is the other half: a code marked directly onto bare metal has far less contrast than black on white, so direct part marking needs a scanner intended for it rather than the handheld unit used in the stores. Decide the symbology and the marking method together with the reader, because those three form one system, and confirm what the code links to — an asset register, a maintenance system or a stores movement — before anything is printed.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Application | Asset register, tool control, stores movement, or work order tracking |
|---|---|
| Symbology | Linear barcode, or a 2D code such as DataMatrix or QR |
| Damage exposure | 2D codes carry error correction and survive partial damage |
| Marking method | Printed label, engraved plate, or direct part marking |
| Substrate and contrast | Direct marks on bare metal have low contrast — it affects the reader |
| Reader type | Handheld, fixed mount, or a rugged mobile computer |
| Read distance | How far from the code the operator will scan |
| Environment | Outdoor, oily, washdown, or high temperature |
| Expected label life | State it — an unreadable asset tag is an untracked asset |
| Data content | What the code encodes, and what system it resolves to |
| Numbering scheme | Existing asset numbering the codes must follow |
| Quantity | Labels or plates now, and the annual issue rate |
