Cathodic protection stops external corrosion on buried or submerged steel by making the structure the cathode of an electrochemical cell, and the enquiry needs to say which of the two ways that happens: sacrificial anodes (simpler, no power required, limited output) or impressed current (higher output, needs a rectifier and power supply, and needs monitoring). The choice depends on the structure's size, the soil or water resistivity, and whether coating is also present — a well-coated pipeline needs a fraction of the current an uncoated one does. Reference cells and test posts should be specified alongside the system so the protection level can actually be verified after installation.
