A corrosion coupon is a small, weighed sample of the pipeline or vessel material exposed to the process stream and removed on a schedule, and the weight loss converts directly to a corrosion rate in the units the integrity engineer needs. The coupon material must match the pipe or vessel material being monitored, or the result describes the coupon and not the asset. State the access fitting the coupon holder will use — a retrievable fitting under pressure, or a spool-piece arrangement requiring shutdown to change — along with the process conditions and the retrieval interval expected, since that drives the holder's mechanical rating.
