A rotary shaft seal is quoted from three dimensions in a fixed order — shaft diameter, housing bore, width — and getting them in that order avoids most of the errors on this line. But the dimension that determines whether the new seal actually holds is the one nobody measures: the shaft surface it runs on. A seal that has run for years leaves a polished groove in the shaft, and a replacement seated at the same axial position runs straight back into that groove and leaks from the first hour. The remedies are known — fit a thin repair sleeve over the worn track, or use a seal whose lip sits at a different depth — but both have to be decided before ordering. Two more points: state whether the lip needs a garter spring, which is standard for oil and often omitted for grease, and state the direction of pressure, because a plain lip seal will not hold pressure from the wrong side.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Shaft diameter | Measured, not nominal — and note any wear groove |
|---|---|
| Housing bore | The outside diameter the seal presses into |
| Width | Seal section width, and the axial space available |
| Shaft surface condition | State if a wear groove exists at the old seal position |
| Repair sleeve | A thin sleeve over the worn track avoids machining the shaft |
| Lip type | Single lip, double lip, or with a dust lip for dirty environments |
| Garter spring | Usual for oil, often omitted for grease |
| Compound | NBR, FKM or PTFE, matched to the fluid and the temperature |
| Shaft speed | Surface speed at the lip decides the material and the finish |
| Pressure | Plain lip seals hold very little — state if the seal is pressurised |
| Direction of sealing | Which side the fluid is on, and which side the dirt is on |
| Quantity | Pieces per size, and whether spares are wanted for the overhaul |
