PTFE is chosen when almost nothing else will hold the chemistry, and its weakness is mechanical rather than chemical. Virgin PTFE creeps: under bolt load it flows sideways out of the joint over time, the bolts lose tension and the flange starts weeping months after a perfectly good installation. That single behaviour is why restructured and filled grades exist, and it is the question to settle first — a virgin sheet gasket is right for a low-load, low-temperature, chemically severe duty, while anything that must hold bolt load over time wants a restructured or filled grade. The consequence for the joint is that it is normally retorqued after the system has been through its first heat cycle, and that step belongs in the method statement rather than in folklore. Say what the fluid is, what the flange is and whether the joint is thermally cycled, and whether any potable water or food-contact approval is needed.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Flange size and class | Nominal size and pressure class, and the standard |
|---|---|
| Flange facing | Raised face, flat face, or a full-face gasket required |
| PTFE grade | Virgin sheet, restructured, or filled with glass, barium or silica |
| Creep resistance | State if the joint must hold bolt load over months |
| Thickness | Thinner is usually better — thick soft gaskets relax more |
| Service fluid | The chemistry that made PTFE the choice |
| Design pressure and temperature | Operating and upset conditions at the joint |
| Thermal cycling | Cycled joints normally need a retorque after the first heat |
| Bolt load available | Bolt size, count and the torque procedure in use |
| Approvals | State if potable water or food contact approval is required |
| Cutting | Supplied cut to size, or as sheet for cutting on site |
| Quantity | Pieces per size, or sheets and their dimensions |
