A spiral wound gasket is a semi-metallic assembly of up to four parts, and each part has a separate specification that must be stated. The winding is a metal strip and a soft filler wound together; the inner ring stops the winding buckling inward into the bore; the outer centring ring locates the gasket in the bolt circle and acts as a compression stop so the winding cannot be crushed. A gasket ordered without the outer ring on a raised-face flange will not sit centrally, and one ordered without an inner ring on a high-pressure joint can fail inward. Dimensions come from the flange, not from the pipe: nominal size, pressure class and facing together under ASME B16.20. The colour coding of the ring rim is a real convention that identifies winding and filler at a glance, and it is worth using it when checking a delivery against what was ordered rather than trusting the box label.
