This is a rescue-route decision before it is a product decision. A spine board is a flat immobilisation device designed to be strapped and carried horizontally, and it is the wrong tool for extracting someone vertically from a vessel, a shaft or a scaffold — that job needs a basket stretcher or a rescue stretcher that wraps the casualty and takes a lifting bridle. Sites with confined space entry permits almost always need the second type, and often discover it during a drill. Three specification points follow from that. State the rescue scenario and the orientation the casualty will travel in, state the working load and whether the device will be lifted mechanically, and state the environment: boards used near radiography need to be X-ray translucent, boards used offshore need to float and to survive salt, and boards used in a chemical area need a surface that can actually be decontaminated.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Rescue scenario | Ground level, confined space, vertical lift, or marine recovery |
|---|---|
| Device type | Spine board, basket stretcher, wrap stretcher or folding stretcher |
| Carry orientation | Horizontal only, or vertical and angled extraction |
| Working load | Rated casualty weight, and whether it is lifted by crane or davit |
| Lifting attachment | State if a bridle or harness set is required with it |
| Immobilisation | Head blocks, spider straps or pin straps — state what is needed |
| X-ray translucency | Required where imaging happens without transferring the casualty |
| Buoyancy | State if the device must float for over-water work |
| Surface and cleaning | Non-porous shell for chemical or biological decontamination |
| Storage | Wall bracket, cabinet or vehicle mount, and any space limit |
| Weight of the device | Matters where a two-person team must carry it to the casualty |
| Quantity and locations | Units, and the rescue points each must cover |
