An intruder alarm is specified by grade, and the grade is a judgement about the attacker rather than about the building. The EN 50131 series sets four security grades that describe the level of knowledge and equipment an intruder is assumed to have — from an opportunist who knows nothing of alarm systems up to someone with the resources and the intent to plan around one — and every component in the system has to meet the grade, since a grade 3 panel with grade 2 detectors is a grade 2 system. Alongside it sits an environmental class describing the conditions the equipment must survive, which matters for anything mounted outside in this climate. The second half is what the alarm does when it activates. A local sounder deters; signalling to a monitoring centre brings a response; and the signalling path itself needs to be resilient, because cutting a single line should not silence the system.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Security grade | EN 50131 grade 1 to 4 — every component must meet it |
|---|---|
| Environmental class | For any component mounted outside or in an unconditioned space |
| Premises type | Office, villa, warehouse, plant, or a remote unmanned site |
| Zones required | Detection points now, and expansion allowance |
| Detector types | PIR, dual technology, contacts, vibration, or glass break |
| Response on activation | Local sounder only, or signalled to a monitoring centre |
| Signalling path | Dual path, so cutting one line does not silence the system |
| Keypads and setting | Positions, and whether setting is by code, card or app |
| Part setting | Areas armed while others stay occupied |
| Standby power | Battery autonomy required for panel and detectors |
| Integration | CCTV verification, access control, or lighting |
| Confirmation | Sequential confirmation to reduce false-alarm response |
