Black is a surface condition, not a grade, and it is worth being clear about that because the word is used loosely in enquiries. It means uncoated steel carrying the dark oxide layer it left the mill with — no zinc, no paint, no pickling — and the useful question is therefore what happens to that surface next. If the part is going to be blasted and coated anyway, black sheet is the correct and cheapest starting point and nothing needs to be said. If it is going straight to paint, the scale has to come off first, and skipping that produces a coating that lifts with the scale still stuck to its underside a year later. And if the sheet is going into store in a humid coastal environment, plain uncoated steel will develop surface rust in weeks, so either it is oiled, or it is used quickly, or it is bought pickled and oiled instead. State the grade, the thickness, and what the surface has to do.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Grade | The steel grade, which is separate from the surface condition |
|---|---|
| Next process | Blast and coat, paint directly, weld, or leave bare |
| Scale removal | Pickling or blasting, if the sheet goes straight to paint |
| Thickness and size | With the tolerance class if fit-up depends on it |
| Storage duration | Uncoated steel rusts within weeks in humid coastal air |
| Oiling | Protective oil for storage, and whether it must be removed later |
| Pickled alternative | Pickled and oiled sheet, where a clean surface is needed on arrival |
| Cutting | Cut to size, or profile cut to drawing |
| Welding | State if welded, since scale must be removed at the weld area |
| Formability | State if the sheet is bent, and to what radius |
| Certification | Mill certificate type and traceability to the heat |
| Quantity | Sheets or tonnage per thickness and grade |
