Proximity sensors detect the presence or position of a target without contact, and are the workhorse of conveyor, packaging, valve-position and machine-guarding applications. Inductive units sense metal only; capacitive units sense most materials but are more sensitive to environment; photoelectric units cover longer ranges. Sensing distance falls sharply with target size and material, so the target has to be described, not just the sensor.
