Which sensor is correct depends on what you are monitoring: casing vibration on a general machine, shaft movement inside a fluid-film bearing, or a remote asset with no cabling.     AccelerometersAccelerometers are the standard sensor for general machine condition monitoring. They measure acceleration across a wide frequency band, which makes them the right choice for detecting bearing defects and gear mesh problems on pumps, compressors, fans and gearboxes. Sensitivity is the main selection decision: 100 mV/g suits most machines, while slow-turning equipment needs a higher output to resolve the low-frequency content.Velocity SensorsVelocity sensors output vibration directly in mm/s, which is the unit most machine condition standards are written in. That makes them convenient where readings are compared against ISO severity charts without further conversion. They suit mid-frequency work on rotating machines and are commonly specified where an existing monitoring system expects a velocity input.Eddy-Current Proximity ProbesEddy-current proximity probes measure shaft position and relative shaft vibration without touching the shaft. They are the sensor used inside machinery protection systems on turbines, large compressors and fluid-film bearing machines, where the requirement is to watch the shaft itself rather than the casing. They are supplied as a matched set of probe, extension cable and driver, and the three must be ordered together to stay within calibration.Wireless Vibration SensorsWireless vibration sensors remove the cabling cost from condition monitoring, which makes them practical for machines that were never worth wiring: remote pumps, cooling fans, and equipment spread across a large site. They report on a schedule rather than continuously, so they suit trending and early warning rather than machinery protection. Battery life, gateway range and the network protocol matter as much as the sensor itself.
