Degreaser selection is a compatibility question before it is a cleaning-power question, and the thing to protect is whatever the degreaser will run onto after it has done its job. A strong alkaline cleaner attacks aluminium; a solvent that lifts oil beautifully can also soften paint, swell rubber seals and hoses, and craze some plastics; and a product that works on a workshop floor may be entirely wrong on a painted machine or an electrical enclosure. So state the surface as well as the soil. Two further points that decide the order in practice. Where the runoff goes matters — a wash bay draining to an interceptor and a yard draining to open ground are different problems, and a readily biodegradable product may be a requirement rather than a preference. And a solvent product has a flash point, which governs how it is stored and whether it can be used near hot work at all.
