The specification that matters is what is being picked up, because for several common materials an ordinary vacuum makes the hazard worse rather than better. Silica from concrete cutting, lead from old paint, and fine metal dust are all respirable, and a machine without adequate filtration collects them at the nozzle and discharges them from the exhaust as an aerosol that spreads further than sweeping would have. Filtration is therefore graded by dust class, and the class is chosen from the material rather than from the machine's size. Combustible dust is a separate problem again: aluminium, magnesium, flour, sugar and many others can be ignited by static or by a spark inside the machine, and that needs a vacuum built for the duty rather than a standard one used carefully. Then the ordinary questions — wet or dry, the tank volume, and whether the filter can be cleaned without opening the machine.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Material collected | Dust, swarf, liquid, sludge, or a specific hazardous dust |
|---|---|
| Hazardous dust | Silica, lead or fine metal — it sets the filtration class required |
| Combustible dust | State if present — it needs a machine built for the duty |
| Dust class | The filtration class the material demands |
| Wet or dry | Liquid pick-up needs a machine rated for it |
| Tank capacity | Volume between emptying, and how it is emptied |
| Filter cleaning | Manual shaker, or automatic without opening the machine |
| Disposal | Bagged capture where the waste must not be handled loose |
| Power | Single or three phase at 60 Hz, or compressed air driven |
| Hazardous area | State the zone if the machine works in a classified area |
| Hose and accessories | Hose bore and length, and the tools required |
| Duty | Occasional clean-up, or continuous use at a machine |
