A dryer is specified by the pressure dew point it must reach, and the two technologies reach very different ones. A refrigerant dryer chills the air and drops the moisture out, and it can go no lower than the point at which the condensate would freeze — which is fine for general workshop air and not enough for instrument air, outdoor pipework or anything that must not carry moisture. A desiccant dryer adsorbs water onto a medium and reaches far lower dew points, at the cost of a purge: a fraction of the dried air is used to regenerate the offline tower, which is a continuous loss that has to be added to the compressor sizing. In this region the sizing input people miss is inlet condition. A refrigerant dryer rated at a mild inlet temperature is handling much hotter and wetter air here, and it must be selected at the real condition or it will not achieve its rating.
