A piston compressor is a duty-cycle machine, and the number that decides whether it survives is the proportion of the hour it is allowed to run. Smaller units are built to run for part of each hour and cool for the rest; ask one to run continuously — which is exactly what happens when it has been sized against an average rather than a peak — and it overheats, the valves carbon up and it fails in a way that looks like poor quality. Where the demand is genuinely continuous, the answer is a heavier industrial machine or a different compressor type. Where reciprocating still wins is high pressure: for breathing air, for nitrogen and gas boosting, and for anything above the range a screw machine covers, piston machines are the practical answer. State the duty pattern honestly, the pressure, and whether the air or gas must be oil-free, because that changes the machine rather than the filtration.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Duty pattern | Minutes of running per hour — this is what the machine is built around |
|---|---|
| Delivery required | Free air delivered, at the working pressure |
| Working pressure | Including any high pressure stage for breathing air or boosting |
| Gas handled | Air, nitrogen, or another gas which changes the machine entirely |
| Oil-free requirement | State if the outlet must not carry oil at all |
| Stages | Single or two stage, decided by the pressure ratio |
| Cooling | Air cooled, and the ventilation available around the machine |
| Ambient temperature | It shortens the permitted duty cycle |
| Receiver | Tank volume, mounted or separate |
| Power supply | Voltage and phases at 60 Hz, or an engine drive for site use |
| Mobility | Fixed, skid or wheeled for site work |
| Service | Valve and ring service intervals, and the spares holding |
