A screw compressor is built for continuous running, and the question that decides which one is how the demand behaves rather than what its peak is. A plant with steady demand is well served by a fixed speed machine running loaded most of the time. A plant whose demand swings — and most do — wastes a great deal of energy in a fixed speed machine, because an unloaded screw compressor still consumes a substantial share of its full-load power while delivering nothing, so a variable speed drive that matches output to demand pays back on the electricity bill rather than on the purchase price. The other thing to state is the inlet condition. Capacity is quoted at a reference inlet temperature, and a machine drawing 45-degree air in an unventilated compressor room delivers less than its published figure and rejects more heat into the room it is standing in, which makes the next hour worse.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Air demand | Free air delivered required, with the peak against the average |
|---|---|
| Demand profile | Steady or swinging — it decides fixed against variable speed |
| Working pressure | At the point of use, plus the distribution losses |
| Inlet air temperature | Capacity is quoted at a reference — state the real room condition |
| Compressor room ventilation | Where the rejected heat goes, and whether it recirculates |
| Oil-free requirement | State if the process cannot tolerate any oil carryover |
| Cooling | Air cooled or water cooled, and the water available if so |
| Power supply | Voltage and phases at 60 Hz, and the starting arrangement |
| Downstream equipment | Receiver, dryer and filtration in scope or already installed |
| Control | Local, sequenced with existing machines, or networked |
| Noise limit | State if the machine sits near occupied space |
| Service | Service intervals, consumables, and the support arrangement |
