Vacuum pumps are selected on two numbers together and quoting one without the other produces the wrong machine. The ultimate vacuum is the lowest pressure the pump can reach with nothing connected; the pumping speed is how fast it removes gas, and it falls away as the pressure drops. A process that has to pull a large volume down quickly needs speed at the working pressure, not a low ultimate figure — and a pump chosen on its headline ultimate vacuum can take hours to do what a faster pump does in minutes. The second question is what is in the gas being pumped. Water vapour, solvent, dust or corrosive product will condense in an oil-sealed pump, contaminate the oil and destroy it, so a process with vapour load wants gas ballast, a knock-out pot, a chemical-duty dry pump, or a liquid ring machine that tolerates carryover by design. State the volume, the working pressure and the gas.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Working pressure | The pressure the process actually operates at |
|---|---|
| Ultimate vacuum | Lowest pressure required with the system closed |
| Pumping speed | At the working pressure, not at atmosphere |
| Volume to be evacuated | With the pump-down time the process allows |
| Gas composition | Vapour, solvent, dust or corrosives change the pump type |
| Condensable load | It needs gas ballast, a knock-out pot, or a dry or liquid ring pump |
| Pump technology | Oil-sealed rotary vane, dry screw, liquid ring, or a pumping set |
| Sealing fluid | For a liquid ring pump, the service liquid and its supply |
| Exhaust | Where the discharge goes, and any filtration or scrubbing required |
| Ambient temperature | It affects cooling and the pump-down performance |
| Power supply | Voltage and phases at 60 Hz |
| Service | Oil changes, filters, and the spares holding |
