The right anemometer depends on which of three jobs it is doing, and they want different instruments. Measuring ventilation performance in a duct or at a grille means measuring an air volume, which needs a vane or a hot wire probe of a size suited to the opening and, critically, a traverse rather than a single reading — air speed varies across a duct, so one measurement in the middle overstates the average. Confirming that a confined space is being purged is a different job again, usually done at the opening with a small probe. And deciding whether a lift may proceed is a wind measurement at height, where a handheld reading at ground level is not what the lift plan is asking for and a mast or crane-mounted sensor is. Say which of the three you are doing, and whether the reading has to be recorded for a permit or a commissioning sheet.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Purpose | Ventilation performance, confined space purge, or wind for lifting |
|---|---|
| Sensor type | Rotating vane, hot wire, cup, or ultrasonic |
| Velocity range | Low duct velocities and high wind need different instruments |
| Duct or grille size | It sets the probe size and the traverse pattern |
| Volume flow calculation | Whether the instrument computes flow from area and velocity |
| Traverse capability | Multi-point averaging, since a single centre reading overstates |
| Temperature and humidity | Often wanted alongside for a commissioning record |
| Mounting | Handheld, telescopic probe, or fixed mast for wind |
| Logging and output | Recording for a permit, a commissioning sheet, or a lift plan |
| Alarm | For a fixed wind sensor, the alarm setpoint and where it signals |
| Hazardous area | State the zone if used in a classified area |
| Calibration | Traceable certificate and the recall interval required |
