Air temperature on its own does not describe heat strain, which is why heat stress is assessed with a wet bulb globe temperature reading instead. WBGT combines a natural wet bulb sensor, which responds to humidity and evaporation, a black globe, which responds to radiant heat from the sun and from hot plant, and the dry air temperature — and ISO 7243 sets out how those combine and how the result is compared against the work being done. That last part matters: the same WBGT is tolerable for light seated work and dangerous for heavy manual work in coveralls, so a threshold without a metabolic rate is only half an assessment. In the Kingdom this sits alongside the ban on working under direct sunlight between noon and three, from 15 June to 15 September. A monitor with a work-rest timer is what turns a reading into a schedule people can follow.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Measurement | WBGT to ISO 7243, or a simpler heat index reading |
|---|---|
| Sensors | Natural wet bulb, black globe and dry bulb — all three for WBGT |
| Indoor and outdoor | The outdoor calculation includes solar load; indoor does not |
| Globe size | Standard globe diameter, or a smaller fast-responding type |
| Work rate | Metabolic class of the work — a threshold means nothing without it |
| Clothing adjustment | Coveralls and PPE add to effective strain |
| Work-rest timer | Turns the reading into a schedule the crew can follow |
| Alarm | Audible or visual alert when a threshold is crossed |
| Logging | Interval logging and export for the records |
| Mounting | Tripod at the work area, or handheld for spot checks |
| Battery life | Must cover a full shift of continuous logging |
| Calibration | Traceable certificate and the recall interval required |
