Two different measurements sit behind this name and buying the wrong one produces numbers nobody can act on. A sound level meter measures what is happening at a point — useful for mapping a plant area, checking a machine, or deciding where hearing protection zones begin. A personal noise dosimeter is worn by the worker for the shift and integrates exposure over time, which is what an assessment of an individual's exposure actually requires, because a fitter who spends twenty minutes beside a compressor and the rest of the day in a workshop is not represented by either reading alone. The other thing to settle is class. Instruments are graded by accuracy, and where the result may be used to justify a control, defend an assessment or support a claim, the higher class is the one to have. Whichever you buy, it needs a calibrator and a documented check before and after each survey.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Measurement type | Area sound level survey, or personal exposure over a shift |
|---|---|
| Instrument class | Accuracy class required by the use the result is put to |
| Parameters required | Time-averaged level, peak, and dose as a percentage |
| Frequency analysis | Octave bands, needed to select hearing protection properly |
| Logging | Interval logging and download to reporting software |
| Calibrator | Acoustic calibrator, checked before and after each survey |
| Windshield | Required for any outdoor measurement |
| Mounting | Tripod for area surveys, or shoulder-mounted for dosimetry |
| Hazardous area | State the zone if surveys are done in a classified area |
| Battery life | Must cover a full shift for dosimetry without a change |
| Reporting | Software and the report format the assessment requires |
| Calibration | Traceable certificate and the recall interval required |
