An immersion suit is judged on how quickly it can be put on and how well it seals, and both are worth thinking about before the specification turns into a size and a quantity. Donning time is part of the design of these suits precisely because the situation they are used in gives no time to read instructions, so the suit has to go on over working clothes, in the dark, by someone who is frightened — which makes the stowage position and the training as much a part of the purchase as the garment. Sealing is the other half: face, wrist and ankle seals are what keep the insulating layer working, and a suit that has been stowed folded for years in a hot locker can have hardened seals and a perished zip long before its nominal life is up. That is why these carry a service and pressure test regime, and why the servicing arrangement should be settled at the time of purchase.
