For a vessel or an offshore installation the safety outfit is not a shopping list, it is an inventory tied to a certificate, and the useful way to buy it is against that inventory rather than item by item. What the regime requires depends on the vessel type, its size, where it trades and how many people are aboard, and the survey checks that everything on the list is present, in date and serviced. Expiry is what actually drives the ordering. Pyrotechnics have a stamped expiry, EPIRB and hydrostatic release units have battery and service dates, liferafts and inflatable equipment carry annual or extended service intervals, and every one of those dates is a potential detention if it lapses before the next survey. So the practical enquiry is a schedule: the item, the quantity, and the date each currently expires. Send that and the replacement programme can be quoted and phased rather than discovered at survey.
