Two things about V-belt pulleys catch buyers out, and both are easy to state up front. The first is that most industrial pulleys are bored for a taper bush rather than for the shaft, so the pulley and the bush are separate items with separate part numbers, and the bush carries the finished bore and keyway. Order the pulley alone and it arrives with a taper hole that fits nothing. The second is that the groove profile has to match the belt section — ISO 4183 covers the classical sections Y, Z, A, B, C, D and E and the narrow sections SPZ, SPA, SPB and SPC, and a narrow belt sitting in a classical groove of similar size touches in the wrong place and wears out quickly. Then the ratio and the centre distance: changing a pulley to change speed also changes the belt length required, so a speed change is a three-part order rather than one, and there must be enough take-up on the slide rails to tension it.
