A gear can only be quoted from the geometry of the pair it runs in, and the usual difficulty is that the gear being replaced is the broken one. Three numbers define it — the module or diametral pitch, the number of teeth, and the pressure angle — and the first two can be recovered from the mating gear plus the centre distance even when the original is in pieces. Send those rather than an outside diameter, which is the measurement most people offer and the one that changes with tooth correction. Then the mechanical side. Face width and material set the load capacity, and hardening matters more than grade alone: a through-hardened gear and a case-hardened one of the same steel have very different tooth strength and very different lead times. Say whether the gear must be replaced as a pair, because a new gear meshing with a worn mate wears to match it quickly, and the second failure is sooner than the first.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Module or diametral pitch | The single most important number — metric or imperial |
|---|---|
| Number of teeth | On this gear and on its mate |
| Pressure angle | Commonly 20 degrees, but confirm it against the mating gear |
| Centre distance | Between shaft centres — it confirms the geometry |
| Face width | Tooth width, which with material sets the load capacity |
| Bore and keyway | Finished bore, keyway size, and any hub or boss detail |
| Material and hardening | Through-hardened, case-hardened or nitrided — it changes lead time |
| Transmitted torque and speed | With the service factor for the load character |
| Quality grade | Accuracy grade required, which drives noise and load sharing |
| Replace as a pair | A new gear on a worn mate wears to match it quickly |
| Sample available | State if the old gear or a drawing can be provided |
| Quantity and urgency | Units, and whether this is a breakdown |
