A worm gearbox gives a very large ratio in one compact stage and a right-angle output, and it pays for that with sliding contact between the worm and the wheel. Sliding means friction, friction means heat, and heat is why these units carry two separate ratings: a mechanical rating for the torque the gears can transmit, and a thermal rating for the power the case can shed continuously. On a hot site the thermal rating is frequently the lower of the two, and a unit selected only against torque runs above its oil temperature limit and fails as a lubrication problem. State the ambient. The second point concerns self-locking. High-ratio worm sets often will not back-drive, and it is tempting to treat that as a brake — but it is a friction effect, not a designed holding device, and vibration can release it. If a load must be held, specify a brake. Say the input speed, the output torque, the duty cycle and the ambient.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Ratio | Required reduction, or the output speed at the given input |
|---|---|
| Input speed and power | Motor rating and RPM at the input shaft |
| Output torque | Required at the output shaft, with any peak |
| Service factor | Set by the load character and the starts per hour |
| Ambient temperature | The thermal rating is often lower than the mechanical one |
| Duty cycle | Continuous, intermittent, or short-time — it changes the thermal case |
| Mounting position | Foot, flange or shaft-mounted, and the orientation |
| Shaft arrangement | Solid or hollow output, single or double extended |
| Back-driving | State if the load must be held — use a brake, not self-locking |
| Lubrication | Filled for life or serviceable, and the oil grade for the ambient |
| Motor | State if supplied as a geared motor with the motor fitted |
| Environment | Dust, washdown or corrosion exposure at the unit |
