This page is about the air a pneumatic circuit needs at the point of use, not about choosing a machine — for that see screw compressors, and for drying see air dryers. Most pneumatic faults on a plant are supply faults, and they show up as symptoms nobody connects to the compressor house: a cylinder that is slow only when the shift is busy, a valve that sticks, a tool that will not reach its rated torque. Three things cause almost all of it. Pressure measured at the compressor is not pressure at the tool, and a long undersized distribution run loses more than people expect. Peak demand is not average demand, and a receiver close to the heavy user is what covers the difference. And take-offs matter: a branch taken from the bottom of a header collects the condensate that the header is carrying, which is why take-offs come off the top. State the demand at the tool, the pressure there, and the distribution you already have.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Demand at the point of use | Free air delivered needed by the tools, with simultaneity |
|---|---|
| Pressure at the tool | Not at the compressor — state the difference if you know it |
| Peak against average | Short heavy demands are covered by a local receiver |
| Distribution pipework | Material, bore and run length, ring or spur |
| Take-off arrangement | From the top of the header, so condensate stays in it |
| Local receiver | Volume near a heavy intermittent user |
| Air quality required | ISO 8573-1 class at the tool, not at the compressor |
| Point-of-use preparation | Filter, regulator and lubricator at each drop |
| Condensate at low points | Drain legs and automatic drains along the run |
| Leak survey | State if a leak survey of the existing system is wanted |
| Future demand | Planned additions, so the distribution is sized once |
| Existing plant | Compressors, receivers and dryers already installed |
