An air regulator is sized on flow, not on port size, and that is the mistake that repeats. A regulator holds its setpoint well at low flow and its outlet sags as demand rises — the effect is called droop, and a unit chosen because it has the right thread will droop badly if the tool downstream draws more than it was built for. Ask for the flow at the working pressure and match the regulator to it. The second choice is relieving or non-relieving. A relieving regulator vents downstream air when you turn the setting down, so the pressure actually falls; a non-relieving one does not, and the pressure stays trapped until something uses it, which is dangerous where an operator has just reduced the setting expecting the system to be safer. Then decide whether this is a single regulator or a filter-regulator-lubricator set, and specify the filtration by air quality class rather than by a micron number alone.
