Biometrics fail in the field for reasons that never appear in a demonstration, and the biggest one on an industrial site is hands. Fingerprint recognition depends on ridge detail, and workers who handle steel, cement, solvents or abrasives wear that detail away — so a workforce of fitters and masons will produce a persistent group of people the reader cannot enrol or cannot match, and every one of them becomes a daily manual override. Add gloves, sweat and dust at an outdoor gate and the failure rate climbs further. Face or iris recognition avoids the hand problem and brings its own: strong sunlight behind a subject, and headwear or eyewear. The other question to settle before purchase is where the template lives — on the reader, on a server, or on the card the holder carries — because that is a data protection decision as much as a technical one, and it is much cheaper to answer now than to re-architect later.
