A turnstile exists to enforce one person per authorisation, and the specification follows from how hard it has to enforce that and how many people must pass. Throughput is the first number: a shift change at a plant gate puts hundreds of people through a few lanes in a few minutes, and a lane that cycles too slowly creates a queue that ends with somebody propping a gate open, which defeats the installation. The second is the anti-tailgating requirement, which ranges from a waist-height tripod that is easily climbed to a full-height rotor that physically cannot be bypassed, with optical lanes in between offering detection rather than obstruction. The third is what has to happen in an emergency: a lane that locks people in is not acceptable on an escape route, so drop-arm or breakaway behaviour on fire alarm is a design requirement. Add at least one wide lane for accessibility and for anyone carrying tools.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Throughput required | People per minute at peak, such as shift change |
|---|---|
| Lane count | Including at least one wide accessible lane |
| Anti-tailgating level | Tripod, full-height rotor, or optical lane with detection |
| Direction control | One way, bidirectional, or free exit |
| Emergency behaviour | Drop-arm or breakaway on fire alarm for escape routes |
| Location | Indoor lobby, covered gatehouse, or fully exposed outdoors |
| Materials and finish | Stainless grade for coastal exposure and heavy use |
| Reader integration | Reader type and where it mounts on the lane |
| Power and standby | Supply at the gate, and behaviour on power loss |
| Civil works | Foundation, cable routes and levelling at the position |
| Vehicle lane | State if a separate vehicle gate or barrier is in scope |
| Maintenance access | Frequency of use decides the duty class needed |
