RFID here means reading a tag at a distance rather than presenting a card, and that changes the engineering completely. Long-range UHF is what lets a vehicle be identified as it approaches a gate without the driver winding a window down, and what lets a pallet or a tool be found without being handled. Range comes from the frequency and from whether the tag has a battery: a passive tag is powered by the reader and is cheap and maintenance-free at moderate range, while an active tag carries its own cell, reaches much further, and eventually needs replacing. What most affects performance is the environment, because metal and liquid both interfere with UHF — a tag stuck directly on a steel drum or a tank behaves very differently from the same tag on cardboard, and on-metal tags exist for exactly that. State what is being tagged, how far the read must work, and how fast the tag moves.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Application | Vehicle gate, personnel, asset tracking, tool control, or stock |
|---|---|
| Read range required | Distance from reader to tag in real conditions |
| Tag type | Passive for cost and no maintenance, active for long range |
| Frequency band | UHF for range, high frequency for close-range and reliability |
| Tag mounting surface | Metal and liquid detune UHF — state the material |
| Tag speed | How fast the tag passes the read point |
| Tag form factor | Windscreen label, hard tag, cable tie, or embedded |
| Environment | Outdoor, sun, dust, washdown, or chemical exposure |
| Reader mounting | Gantry, pole or portal, with the antenna arrangement |
| Read accuracy target | Acceptable miss rate — it drives the antenna design |
| Back-end system | Where reads are sent, and the integration required |
| Tag volume | Initial tags and the annual replacement expected |
