The credential matters more than the reader, and this is the one place a security system quietly fails while appearing to work. Older 125 kHz proximity cards transmit a fixed number with no cryptography, and cloning one requires an inexpensive device and a moment standing near the holder — so a site running them has a card system with roughly the security of a printed number. Modern smart credentials use mutual authentication and encrypted communication between card and reader, and are a different proposition entirely. If the site already has cards, say which technology, because a multi-technology reader is what allows a phased migration instead of reissuing every card on one weekend. The second question is the link back to the controller: the older open wiring protocol is simple and unauthenticated, and a supervised alternative is what stops someone opening a reader outside the door and injecting a valid credential onto the wire.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Existing credential | The card technology already issued, if any |
|---|---|
| Credential technology required | Encrypted smart credential, or legacy proximity |
| Migration | State if a multi-technology reader is needed for a phased change |
| Mobile credentials | State if phone-based access is required |
| Reader-to-controller protocol | Open unauthenticated wiring, or a supervised encrypted protocol |
| Keypad | Required where card plus PIN is used on higher security doors |
| Mounting | Mullion, single gang, or on metal — metal detunes some readers |
| Read range | Presentation distance needed at each door |
| Environment | Indoor, outdoor, direct sun, or washdown |
| IP and vandal rating | Readers outside the secure side need to survive attack |
| Controller compatibility | The panel or platform these must work with |
| Quantity | Readers per door type, and the credential volume to issue |
