Valve lockouts are sized from the valve, and the measurement needed depends on the valve type rather than the line size. A gate valve is locked by a cover that encloses the handwheel, so the number that matters is the handwheel diameter. A ball valve is locked by a device that traps the lever, so what matters is the lever length and the stem arrangement. A butterfly valve with a gear operator is different again. Ordering by pipe size gives the wrong device more often than not, because two valves on the same line size can carry very different handwheels. There is a second decision that catches people out: whether the valve must be locked open or locked closed. Some devices only hold one state — a cover that prevents a handwheel turning holds whichever position it was fitted in, while a lever device may need a different part to hold the open position. Survey the valves, note the type and the dimension, and state the position each must be held in.
