An anchor is not selected from the load alone, because in most failures the concrete gives way rather than the steel. What governs is the cone of concrete the anchor can mobilise, and that shrinks as the anchor moves closer to an edge or nearer to its neighbours — so edge distance, spacing and the depth of the member are inputs alongside the load, and an anchor with an ample published capacity can be worth a fraction of it at 60 millimetres from a slab edge. The second input is whether the concrete is cracked. Concrete in a tension zone is assumed to crack in service, and an anchor qualified only for uncracked concrete is not valid there — a distinction that does not appear on the box. Mechanical expansion anchors are quick and need clean holes; chemical anchors suit closer edge distances and reach higher loads, and their cure time is temperature dependent, which in this climate cuts both ways. Send the load, the fixture and the geometry.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Load | Tension, shear and any moment, with the load case |
|---|---|
| Base material | Concrete grade, hollow or solid block, or masonry |
| Cracked or uncracked concrete | Tension zones need an anchor qualified for cracked concrete |
| Edge distance | It reduces capacity sharply — measure it, do not assume |
| Anchor spacing | Anchors close together share one concrete cone |
| Member thickness | Slab or wall depth available for embedment |
| Anchor type | Expansion, undercut, screw anchor, or chemical resin |
| Embedment depth | Required, and whether the drilling depth is achievable |
| Fixture thickness | It sets the anchor length above the embedment |
| Ambient at installation | Resin cure time is temperature dependent, both ways |
| Corrosion exposure | Zinc, hot dip, or stainless for external and coastal work |
| Seismic or fire rating | State if the design requires either qualification |
| Installation | Hole cleaning, torque values, and whether pull testing is required |
