A nut is specified against the bolt it goes on, and the property class is where that pairing lives. Under ISO 898-2 a nut carries a class of its own, and it must be at least equal to the class of the bolt — put a class 8 nut on a class 10.9 bolt and the assembly is limited by the nut, which will strip its threads before the bolt reaches the tension the joint was designed for. The failure is a stripped nut and it is usually blamed on the bolt. The second decision is how the nut is stopped from coming loose, and the options are genuinely different rather than interchangeable: a nylon insert nut is reusable a limited number of times and has a temperature ceiling the insert cannot pass, an all-metal prevailing torque nut survives heat and vibration, and a plain nut with a locking compound is a different approach again. And on a galvanised bolt the nut is tapped oversize to clear the coating, so galvanised nuts and bolts are supplied as a pair.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.

|---|---|
| Mating bolt | Diameter, thread and property class of the bolt it goes on |
| Thread | Coarse or fine, metric or imperial, matching the bolt |
| Locking method | Nylon insert, all-metal prevailing torque, or a locking compound |
| Temperature | Nylon inserts have a ceiling — state if the joint runs hot |
| Reuse | How many times the nut will be removed and refitted |
| Finish | Plain, zinc plated, hot dip galvanised, or stainless |
| Galvanised pairing | Galvanised nuts are tapped oversize and supplied with their bolts |
| Nut style | Standard, thin, flanged, dome, or wing |
| Washers | Flat, spring or structural washers required with them |
| Certification | Material certificate type and any batch traceability required |
