Screws are chosen by what they have to cut their own thread into, and the two failure modes are opposite. In thin sheet the screw holds by the few threads that engage, so pull-out is the limit and the answer is a coarser thread, a wider thread form or a washered head that spreads the load rather than a longer screw. In thicker steel the screw has to drill before it threads, so the drill point has to be long enough to get through the full thickness before the threads start pulling — a self-drilling screw whose point is too short for the steel starts threading while still drilling and snaps. Match the point to the thickness. Two other things belong in the order. In roofing and cladding the sealing washer is what keeps water out, and EPDM-bonded washers age in this sun, so the screw's exposed life is a real specification. And on coated or stainless sheet the screw material has to avoid a galvanic pair.
