Structural bolting assemblies for preloaded connections are a different product from high grade bolts sold loose, and the difference is not the steel. A preloaded connection works because the bolt is tensioned to a specified value, and reaching that value reliably depends on the friction in the threads and under the nut face — so the assembly is supplied as a matched set of bolt, nut and washer, lubricated by the manufacturer and tested together, with a stated relationship between the tightening applied and the preload achieved. Mixing a bolt from one lot with a nut from another destroys that relationship, and the connection may be substantially under-tensioned while everyone believes the procedure was followed. Two consequences: the sets are ordered and kept as lots with their certificates, and the lubrication has a shelf life and is damaged by site storage in the open. State the standard the connection is designed to and the tightening method.
