Grip range is the specification that decides whether a blind rivet works, and it is the one most often left out. Every rivet is made for a band of total material thickness: below it the mandrel breaks before the tail has formed properly, above it the tail never closes and the joint is loose from the day it was set. Measure the combined thickness of everything being joined, including any gasket or coating, and choose the rivet whose grip range brackets it. The hole matters just as much — drilled oversize, the rivet fills but does not clamp. Two further points. The rivet body and the material it joins should not form a galvanic pair, which is why aluminium rivets are wrong in stainless sheet and why the stem material matters as well as the body. And where the joint must not leak, a closed-end or sealed rivet is a different product from a standard open one and has to be asked for.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Total grip thickness | Everything being joined, including gasket and coating |
|---|---|
| Grip range required | The rivet range must bracket the actual thickness |
| Hole diameter | An oversize hole fills but does not clamp |
| Rivet diameter | With the hole tolerance the drilling will actually achieve |
| Body material | Aluminium, steel, stainless, or copper |
| Stem material | It matters for corrosion as much as the body does |
| Galvanic pairing | Against the sheet material, especially in coastal air |
| Sealed joint | Closed-end or sealed rivets where the joint must not leak |
| Head type | Dome, countersunk, or large flange for soft or thin material |
| Strength requirement | Shear and tensile load on the joint, if it is structural |
| Setting tool | Hand, battery or pneumatic, and the nosepieces required |
| Quantity | Per size and material, with the annual usage |
