Duplex stainless steel is specified in ballast tanks, cargo tanks, and splash-zone structures where 316L alone would pit or crevice-corrode over the vessel's life, because the mixed austenite-ferrite microstructure gives roughly double the yield strength of standard austenitic grades along with markedly better chloride resistance. Grade selection matters more than the "duplex" label alone: 2205 covers most marine structural and piping duty, while super duplex grades (2507) are reserved for the most aggressive seawater and produced-water service. The trade-off is fabrication — duplex needs tighter heat input control during welding to keep the phase balance correct, so the mill certificate and the welding procedure travel together.
